Gardeners Hampton Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Hampton is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a way that safeguards the health, safety, and welfare of our employees, clients, contractors, visitors, and members of the public. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety across all work activities, including domestic gardens, commercial grounds, and communal outdoor areas.
Our Health and Safety Commitment
We aim to prevent injury, ill health, and property damage by planning and carrying out all gardening work safely and responsibly. We comply with applicable health and safety legislation, industry codes of practice, and relevant guidance for horticultural and grounds maintenance activities.
Health and safety considerations are integrated into how we design, price, schedule, and deliver our gardening services. We continually seek opportunities to improve our standards, equipment, and working methods.
Management Responsibilities
The management of Gardeners Hampton has overall responsibility for health and safety. This includes ensuring that appropriate systems, procedures, and resources are in place to identify and control risks associated with our gardening operations.
Management responsibilities include:
Planning work so that health and safety risks are identified and controlled before tasks begin. Providing suitable tools, machinery, and personal protective equipment that are maintained in safe working condition. Ensuring staff receive appropriate training, instruction, and supervision for the tasks they perform. Reviewing accidents, near misses, and incidents to prevent recurrence and improve safety standards. Monitoring compliance with this policy and updating it as necessary to reflect changes in the law or in our operations.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee and operative working for Gardeners Hampton has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions.
All staff are expected to:
Follow company safety procedures, method statements, and risk assessments. Use tools, machinery, and protective equipment in accordance with training and instructions. Report hazards, defects, near misses, and incidents without delay so that they can be investigated and controlled. Refrain from horseplay, misuse of equipment, or any behaviour that may compromise safety. Cooperate with management and clients in implementing health and safety measures on site.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
We carry out risk assessments for our gardening and grounds maintenance tasks, identifying hazards such as manual handling, use of machinery, slips and trips, working at height, exposure to noise and vibration, use of chemicals, and interaction with the public.
From these assessments, we develop method statements and safe systems of work. Staff are briefed on the relevant procedures before work begins, and controls are reviewed where the site, weather conditions, or task requirements change.
Tools, Machinery, and Equipment
Gardeners Hampton ensures that all tools, machinery, and equipment used in our gardening work are suitable for the task, properly maintained, and used only by competent personnel.
Our arrangements include:
Routine inspection and maintenance of mowers, trimmers, blowers, and other powered equipment. Using guarding, safety devices, and emergency stops where applicable. Storing equipment securely when not in use to prevent unauthorised access. Isolating defective tools or machinery until they have been repaired or replaced.
Personal Protective Equipment
Appropriate personal protective equipment is provided and used where risks cannot be eliminated by other means. This may include safety footwear, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, high-visibility clothing, and respiratory protection where necessary.
Employees are required to wear the specified protective equipment for each task and to maintain it in good condition. Damaged or worn items must be reported and replaced promptly.
Chemicals, Fertilisers, and Substances
Where herbicides, pesticides, fertilisers, or other substances are used, Gardeners Hampton follows recognised good practice to minimise risk to people, pets, wildlife, and the wider environment.
We ensure that:
Only trained and authorised personnel apply such products. Safety data information is consulted and followed. Products are stored, transported, and mixed safely and in suitable containers. Measures are taken to prevent contamination of soil, water, or neighbouring properties. Clients are informed of any precautions required after treatment.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Many gardening tasks involve lifting, carrying, digging, and repetitive movements. We assess manual handling risks and use mechanical aids, improved techniques, or team lifts wherever practicable to reduce strain and the risk of musculoskeletal injury.
Staff receive guidance on posture, lifting methods, and taking appropriate breaks to reduce fatigue.
Working at Height
Where work at height is required, such as pruning, hedge cutting, or accessing raised beds and structures, Gardeners Hampton uses suitable access equipment and follows safe working practices.
Ladders, platforms, and other equipment are inspected and used only on stable ground and in appropriate weather conditions. Work at height is avoided where safer alternatives exist.
Traffic, Site Access, and Public Safety
Our teams take particular care when working near roads, driveways, paths, and other areas accessed by vehicles or pedestrians. Work areas are organised to reduce risks from moving vehicles, flying debris, or tripping hazards.
Where necessary, we use barriers, cones, signage, or spotters to protect the public and to provide clear separation between work zones and walkways.
Environmental and Community Considerations
We recognise that health and safety extends to the wider environment and the communities where we operate. Gardeners Hampton aims to minimise noise, dust, and disturbance, and to manage waste responsibly through reduction, reuse, and recycling where practicable.
We consider the impact of our work on neighbouring properties, wildlife habitats, and shared outdoor spaces, adopting methods that protect both people and the environment.
Training, Communication, and Supervision
Health and safety training is provided to all relevant staff, covering topics such as safe machinery use, manual handling, chemical safety, emergency procedures, and site-specific risks.
Supervisors ensure that new employees and subcontractors are inducted into our safety standards and are adequately supervised until they are competent to work independently. Safety information is communicated clearly and reviewed as necessary.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents, and near misses must be reported to management as soon as possible. We investigate such events to identify root causes and to implement corrective actions.
Our teams are briefed on emergency procedures, including dealing with injuries, fire, equipment failure, and severe weather. First aid supplies are available, and staff know how to obtain assistance quickly when required.
Policy Review
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes in our activities, equipment, or legal requirements. Gardeners Hampton is committed to continuous improvement in health and safety performance and to working collaboratively with clients and staff to provide safe, well-maintained outdoor spaces.
